LOST AND FOUND

I. AUTHORITY:

The authority for to establish rules for the University is granted in Chapters 120.53(1)(a), 249.227(1), 705.17, and 705.18, Florida Statues.

II. POLICY:

It is the policy of the University to return lost and found property to its rightful owner. Therefore, University staff and visitors shall turn in all items of personal property found on campus to the nearest department office. On non-working days or after normal working hours, such items shall be turned over to the University Police and Safety Department.

Items found on campus may be claimed only by the rightful owner and may not be returned to the finder.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Department heads are responsible for:

1. Maintaining security for items received; and

2. Turning over to the University Police and Safety Department any item not claimed within 24 hours of receipt.

B. The University Police and Safety Department is responsible for:

1. Operate a central lost and found collection point;

2. Safeguard items received;

3. Make reasonable efforts to deliver the item(s) to the rightful owner by making at least one effort to locate the rightful owner of items received;

4. Maintain a record of items received at the main collection point; and

5. Request authority from the Vice-president of Academic Affairs, acting as the President’s designee pursuant to Section 20.05(1)(b), F. S., to hold a public auction of all unclaimed items at the main collection point no sooner than 30 days after receipt thereof. Only one auction per fiscal quarter may be held.

6. Auction proceeds shall be deposited into the Student Financial Aid Fund.
