RECYCLING

Consistent with the University's mission to emphasize environmentally oriented studies, Florida Gulf Coast University is committed to developing and implementing programs for the collection of recyclable materials and for the reduction of solid waste. The Physical Plant department is the lead unit in this endeavor.

The University is contractually attempting to improve collection of recyclable material. With the change in contractors used by the county some new opportunities have arisen. The evening custodial crew will no longer pick up recyclable office paper from the blue containers. Instead, the day crew will pick it up on Fridays. The normal accumulation of paper from offices should be easily handled by this schedule. However, if there are special needs (e.g. boxes of material or an exceptionally large amount of paper), please submit a Customer Request or call the Work Management Center at 590-1370. Be prepared to give the building name, room number, and your name and phone number, in case we need to get back with you. Normally the special pick up will also occur on Friday.

There are several recycling locations on campus. Click here to find the location nearest you.

NEWSPAPERS

The new county solid waste collection contractor, Florida Recycling Services, has put us in touch with SP Recycling Corp. who provides a dumpster on campus specifically for NEWSPAPER ONLY. It is at no cost to the University and located to the rear of Griffin and Howard Halls. The containers formerly used behind the Library and Broadcast Buildings (called 95 gallon totes) were removed, along with those from behind Griffin and Howard Halls. This change allows an overall reduction in the cost of recycling newspaper. There are “Newspaper Only” recycling bins inside Academic Building 3 and on the second floor of the Student Union, with more bins to be placed as necessary. If you notice these bins full, please submit a Customer Request or call the Work Management Center at 590-1370. Be prepared to give the building name, room number, and your name and phone number, in case we need to get back with you.

OFFICE PAPER

Mixed office paper will continue to be collected in the "Blue Recycling" containers in offices and workspaces. However, the custodial contractor will only pick it up on Friday. If there is an exceptionally large amount in an area, again, please submit a Customer Request or call the Work Management Center at 590-1370 to make the Friday pick up. Be prepared to give the building name, room number, and your name and phone number, in case we need to get back with you.

If an office "Blue Recycling" container is full before Friday, it may be emptied at the large "Blue Recycling" container located at the nearest copier room.

The recyclable paper will be collected in clear plastic bags and placed in a container located behind the Campus Support Complex that is used to collect cardboard. Florida Recycling Services has informed us they will separate the material. This offers the opportunity to remove the containers (95 gallon totes) currently used for office paper. However, the cost may not be proportionately reduced because the "cardboard recycling" container may have to be emptied more frequently. This collection process on campus and by Florida Recycling increases the credibility of the effort by eliminating the probability that recyclable material is being mixed with trash.

CANS AND BOTTLES

Cans, including aluminum cans, and bottles are commingled by Florida Recycling Services during their collection. The previous contractor did the same thing, but the University collection process separated them anticipating a change. Since the change did not occur using a separate receptacles for cans and a separate one for bottles is no longer operationally reasonable. Using the receptacles for cans AND bottles will double the number of receptacles available for commingled cans and bottles, hopefully encouraging use through convenience.

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

The University is coordinating with Lee County Environmental Services Division for disposition of electronic equipment. Until recently, it has been sent to the landfill. Starting April 2001, the County will collect all electronic equipment and have it recycled. Normally, the equipment is collected as surplus or disposable property by Physical Plant. Any department that has electronic equipment requiring disposal should submit a Customer Request or call the Work Management Center at 590-1370. Be prepared to give the building name, room number, and your name and phone number, in case we need to get back with you.

OTHER RECYCLABLE ITEMS

The Physical Plant also has been in discussion with Florida Recycling Services about the collection of large volume items, such as phone books, out dated course schedules, and other pamphlets or brochures. It is the responsibility of the department to collect, sort, box and seal their recyclables prior to initiating a work request for pick-up. The Physical Plant can collect the material and use the Warehouse as a collection area.

The key is the ability to identify when material can be recycled, collect it in central location, and schedule it all for one pick up. The Physical Plant will serve as coordinators for that effort, when they are informed the material is ready to be removed for recycling. If you have any material that you feel could be recycled please submit a Customer Request or call the Work Management Center at 590-1370. Be prepared to give the building name, room number, and your name and phone number, in case we need to get back with you.

Physical Plant provides well marked green collection containers in strategically placed locations throughout the campus for the deposit of mixed paper, aluminum cans, and bottles.

Two large recycle containers for cardboard are located on campus: one behind the Howard Hall and Griffin Hall, and one behind the Library. University personnel are responsible for breaking down all cardboard boxes before placing them outside of their areas for collection by the custodial staff who will transport the materials to the containers.

SOLID WASTE

Appropriate sized solid waste dumpsters are provided by Gulf Disposal under contract with Physical Plant and are placed in strategic locations throughout the campus for the deposit of non-recyclable waste. The custodial staff is responsible for emptying office wastebaskets, inside and outside waste cans, and other containers into the dumpsters.
