IV. Applications Group

A. Applications Group General Information

The Applications Group exists to provide useful, accurate, and timely data to effectively manage Florida Gulf Coast University and serve its students. The Applications Group will provide leadership and consultation, promote information sharing and efficiency, and work to eliminate data redundancy. In addition the Applications Group will assist departments with evaluating application software and designing and implementing state-of-the-art software systems. This includes reporting from SAMAS and Personnel Payroll budget systems to generate; standard and ad-hoc reports; mailing labels; form letters, and data downloads.

B. SUS Network

Florida Gulf Coast University is one of ten universities that make up the State University System (SUS). An FGCU user has access to computer systems on this campus as well as other computer systems around the state.

Fiscal management/accounting computing is done at the SAMAS (State Automated Management Accounting System) data center in Tallahassee.

C. Current Systems and Responsibilities

D. Programming Requests

A Programming Request is a form that must be completed and signed before any programming is started. This will allow for better tracking of requests and assist departments in prioritizing their work orders. Requests will be compared to all requests for the university and appropriate priority assigned by the Director of Computer Services.

1. When to Submit a Request

A request should be submitted when a need for programming assistance is determined. Computer Services should have adequate time for planning and implementing application systems, ordering hardware/software, scheduling analyst time, and training analysts/users.

A programming request should be submitted for all new applications or reports. It is at the analyst's discretion as to whether a programming request should be submitted for maintenance on production systems.

2. Who Can Request Data

Anyone can request programming assistance. However, some data is more sensitive than others. For this reason additional signatures must be obtained. The following lists areas of sensitive data and the authorizing signatures that must be obtained before programming will begin.

Type of Data Authorized Signature
Student Data Data Administrator
Personnel Data Director of Human Resources
Accounting Data Controller

3. How To Request Programming Assistance

Request the Computer Services Programming Request form from the Applications Group.

4. How to Request IDs at the Regional Data Centers

Florida Gulf Coast University has access to several state and regional data centers. The following lists the data centers we currently use and the systems we support at each. This information should be used when requesting access to the data centers or systems running on them.
